The Faculty of Medicine of Justus Liebig University Giessen (JLU) and the University Hospital Giessen and Marburg GmbH (UKGM), Giessen Campus, invite applications for a
W3 Professorship in Internal Medicine
with a focus on Haematology-Oncology
as of April 1st, 2024. Reference is made to § 67 Para. 7 Hessian Higher Education Act (HessHG) and to conditions of employment based on § 68 HessHG. Proficient knowledge of German is expected.
Duties:
The successful candidate will represent the entire spectrum of haematology and oncology in research, teaching, and patient care. Particular expertise in translational research into malignant diseases within the framework of competitive collaborative research projects is expected.
The professorship is linked with the management of the Medical Clinic IV at the University Hospital in Giessen. The Medical Clinic IV already houses a W2 Professorship in Internistic Oncology with a specific focus on Individualized Therapy of Solid Tumors, a W2 professorship in Molecular Oncology of Solid Tumors, and a W2 professorship in Signal Transduction of Cellular Motility. The management tasks in patient care associated with the professorship are regulated by a contract with UKGM GmbH.
The successful candidate will have outstanding leadership capacity, and demonstrable innovative (basic and patient-oriented) research competence with a particular focus on drivers of malignant disease processes, and the translation of acquired knowledge into novel preventive and therapeutic concepts. Profound expertise in basic science research in this respect as well as in the conduct of clinical trials is expected.
Focus areas of Medical Clinic IV are haematology, including autologous stem cell transplantation, medical oncology, and interdisciplinary oncology in cooperation with other medical disciplines. Allogenic stem cell transplantation is undertaken in cooperation with UKGM, Marburg Campus. The development and establishment of new cellular therapy procedures will also be carried out in close collaboration with the UKGM, Marburg Campus.
The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to existing collaborative research consortia and research focuses of the JLU’s Faculty of Medicine, including the Cluster of Excellence “Cardio-Pulmonary Institute (CPI), the area of potential “Infections, Inflammation and Medicines”, and the accent areas “Translational Oncology” and “Reparation and Regeneration”. In addition, the professorship is expected to participate in other ongoing and planned collaborative research projects. In particular, the future candidate is intended to play a pivotal role in the establishment of a Hessen-wide Comprehensive Cancer Center (CCC), in cooperation with University Hospitals in Marburg and Frankfurt am Main.
The professorship is integrated into the curricular teaching to be provided by UKGM, Giessen Campus, in the course of studies in medicine.
Collaboration in other existing structures of the Faculty of Medicine for the promotion of young scientists and clinicians, such as the structured graduate program “JLU-TRAINEE” and the clinician scientist program “JLU-CAREER” is desired. This also applies to the cooperation with the Giessen Graduate Centre for the Life Sciences (GGL).
The universities of Giessen and Marburg and the University of Applied Sciences in Central Hessen are working together in a research alliance (Research Campus of Central Hessen) as a structured cooperation based on coordinated priorities. It is expected that the applicant shows cooperativeness to university and department-wide collaborative projects. In particular, cross university/hospital patient-oriented clinical research and the participation in joint clinical studies is expected.
An integration of gender aspects in research, teaching, and patient care is explicitly desired.
Requirements:
Prerequisites for the position include a successfully completed university education in medicine, the necessary qualification for scientific work according to § 67 Para. 1 HessHG, usually proven by a doctorate with merit, and further pertinent academic achievements (e.g. habilitation or internationally recognized subject-specific publications). Your scientific and clinical competence should be proven by many years of experience in management positions.
You are internationally recognized in your field of research and must have extensive expertise in basic oncological research as well as translational research. Success in independent acquisition and management of externally funded projects (preferably DFG, BMBF, EU) is a prerequisite.
In addition, proof of a special pedagogical aptitude is required as a qualification to represent the specialist field in academic teaching in its whole scope.
The successful candidate shows a broad clinical expertise across the entire field. The specialist certification for internal medicine and haematology and oncology is required as well as the foundation for the acquisition of the corresponding advanced training authorization.
Experience in certification, coordination or management of an oncology centre and cross-site centre formation is desired.
Participation in joint clinical studies takes place with the involvement of the branch office of the Marburg Coordinating Center for Clinical Trials, based at JLU’s Faculty of Medicine.
In case the candidate exceeds the basic age limit of 50 years, a civil servant appointment under § 66 Para. 3 sentences 2 and 3 Hessian Higher Education Act (HessHG) in conjunction with § 11 Hessian Career Regulation (HLVO) requires a specific functional interest.
