The Faculty of Medicine of Justus Liebig University Giessen (JLU) invites applications for a

W3 Professorship in Predictive Deep Learning in Medicine and Healthcare

as of now. Reference is made to § 67 Para. 7 Hessian Higher Education Act (HessHG) and to conditions of employment based on § 68 HessHG.

Duties:

We are seeking an internationally recognized researcher in applied artificial intelligence (AI) in the field of human medicine. In Giessen, large amounts of biomedical data including phenotyping data of patients are generated in a variety of externally funded collaborative and individual projects as well as in the routine operations of the University Hospital. In a systemic approach, this professorship will integrate these Big Data from -Omics studies (Epi/Genomics, Transcriptomics, Proteomics and/or Phenomics) together with longitudinal phenotypic patient data on disease progression and therapy response. The focus of this professorship is on the application of machine learning and in particular deep learning methods to generate predictive models for improved patient categorization and disease classification in the field of translational medicine.

The professorship is funded by the newly founded Hessian Center for Artificial Intelligence (hessian.AI), which is meant to promote the broad application of research results in science, economy, and society. The future jobholder will be a member of hessian.AI contributing to the center’s research efforts. Furthermore, the professorship will be integrated into the interfaculty and interuniversity center “University Center for BioMedical Informatics”, which works interdisciplinary on three institutional-thematic pillars: (a) Bioinformatics Core Facility, (b) Medical Informatics and (c) Computational Modeling, as well as the planned Centre for Applied Informatics and Data Science.

The applicant should be actively involved in existing research collaborations, independently solicit research projects (preferably from DFG, BMBF, and EU), and participate in upcoming DFG collaborations as well as national and international networks (e. g. in the area of digital medicine and e-health). This also includes the connection to existing collaborative research projects as well as an active role of their future alignment, especially with regard to the Cluster of Excellence 2026 – Cardio Pulmonary Institute (CPI; funded in the Excellence Strategy of the German Federal and State Governments) and to MIRACUM (consortium funded by the BMBF in the context of the Medical Informatics Initiative).

Integration into the research profile according to the Liebig Concept, in particular into the JLU focus areas “Cardiopulmonary System (Heart/Lung)” or “Mechanisms of Perception and Adaptation”, the JLU area of potential ”Infections, Inflammation and Medicines” or the accent areas of the Faculty of Medicine ”eHealth” and ”Translational Oncology” is encouraged.

You will participate in teaching medical informatics and artificial intelligence to all students of the faculty with a focus on Biomedical Big Data analytics and within the interdisciplinary, cross-university Master's program Bioinformatics and Systems Biology. In addition, you will contribute to the further development of curricular teaching in the field of medical informatics and artificial intelligence in the medical and dental degree programs.

Participation in established structures for the promotion of young scientists and clinicians such as the Giessen Graduate Centre for the Life Sciences (GGL), the structured doctoral program (JLU TRAINEE) and the Clinician Scientist Program (JLU CAREER) is expected.

The Universities of Giessen and Marburg and the University of Applied Sciences in Central Hessen are working together in a research alliance (Research Campus of Central Hessen) as a structured cooperation based on coordinated priorities. It is expected that the applicant shows cooperativeness to university and department-wide collaborative projects.

Requirements:

You are required to have an excellent academic degree in particular in bioinformatics or medical informatics or in the subjects of mathematics, natural sciences and computer science.

Furthermore, a relevant doctorate and additional academic achievements are a prerequisite. You should have an outstanding internationally recognized scientific track record in the field of AI. Success in obtaining (and managing) externally funded projects (preferably DFG, BMBF, EU) is required.

Additional prerequisites are leadership and coordination skills.

Furthermore, a proof of a particular pedagogic aptitude and a necessary qualification to represent the specialist field in academic teaching with great commitment are required. You are expected to be involved in medical education and in the Bioinformatics and Systems Biology program. Experience in structured doctoral education and in the promotion of young scientists is desirable.

The integration of gender aspects in research and teaching is explicitly desired.

In case the candidate exceeds the basic age limit of 50 years, a civil servant appointment under § 66 Para. 3 sentences 2 and 3 Hessian Higher Education Act (HessHG) in conjunction with § 11 Hessian Career Regulation (HLVO) requires a specific functional interest.

JLU aims to employ more women in academic research. We therefore particularly encourage female candidates to apply. JLU also pursues the goal at faculty leadership level of increased competence in dealing with gender and family-related issues. JLU is regarded as a family-friendly university. Applicants with children are very welcome. Applications from disabled people of equal aptitude will be given preference.

We strongly recommend candidates to refer to our fact sheet (https://www.uni-giessen.de/karriere/stellenangebote/ausschreibungen/professuren/infoblatt-e) on application procedures.

Applicants are encouraged additionally to fill in one of the forms (Bewerbungsbogen – application form).

Please send your application with the required documents via online form (https://www.uni-giessen.de/karriere/stellenangebote/application) to the President of Justus Liebig University Giessen by October 5th, 2023, quoting the reference number K-19/23.
