The Faculty of Medicine of Justus Liebig University Giessen (JLU) and the University Hospital of Giessen and Marburg GmbH (UKGM), Giessen Campus, invite applications for a

W2 Professorship in Endocrinology and Diabetology



as of October 1st, 2023. Reference is made to § 67 Para. 7 Hessian Higher Education Act (HessHG) and to conditions of employment based on § 68 HessHG. Proficient knowledge of German is expected.

Duties:

The professorship is associated with a senior physician position in the Department of Internal Medicine III (Endocrinology/Diabetology) at the UKGM. You will represent the Endocrinology and Diabetology in research, teaching and inpatient as well as outpatient medical care including on-call duty and consultancy. The responsibilities of the professorship arising from patient care will be regulated with UKGM.

In the basic research area, molecular, protein chemical and cell biological investigations of adipose tissue function in the context of “Metaflammation”, “Adipose-lnflammation” and the innate immune system will be in the foreground. These research areas are interdisciplinary included in the area of potential “Infections, Inflammations, and Medicines“ of the JLU’s Faculty of Medicine. Furthermore, a close cooperation with the section ”lnfection and lmmunity“ of the Giessen Graduate Centre for the Life Sciences (GGL) is existing. Participation in translational clinical trials in this area is required, with the development of a clinical focus in the area of innovative therapies for obesity, metaflammation, insulin resistance, and type 2 diabetes.

The universities of Giessen and Marburg and the University of Applied Sciences in Central Hessen are working together in a research alliance (Research Campus of Central Hessen) as a structured cooperation based on coordinated priorities. It is expected that the applicant shows cooperativeness to university and department-wide collaborative projects. In particular, cross university/hospital patient-oriented clinical research and the participation in joint clinical studies is required.

In teaching, you are expected to participate in and to further develop the structured endocrinological-diabetological teaching curriculum including representing the area of clinical Endocrinology and Diabetology in Internal Medicine. Furthermore, the successful candidate will explicitly be desired to integrate gender issues in research and teaching.

Requirements:

Prerequisites for the position include a successfully completed university education in medicine, a doctorate with merit, and excellent additional academic achievements (e.g. habilitation or relevant publications in the above-mentioned fields). The applicant should be successful in obtaining external funds as well as should have national and international expertise in the above-mentioned research areas. Methodologically, experimental knowledge of molecular biology, protein chemistry, cell biology and working with transgenic animal models is required. In research, orientation towards common 3R criteria with regard to veterinary approaches is a matter of course.

A specialist certification in internal medicine, endocrinology and diabetology is prerequisite. Further additional certification as Diabetologist of the DDG (Deutsche Diabetes Gesellschaft) and proof of qualifications in Good Clinical Practice (GCP) are desired.

In case the candidate exceeds the basic age limit of 50 years, a civil servant appointment under § 66 Para. 3 sentences 2 and 3 Hessian Higher Education Act (HessHG) in conjunction with § 11 Hessian Career Regulation (HLVO) requires a specific functional interest.
