The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine invites applications for a

W1 Professorship (with W2 tenure track) in Meat Hygiene

The position is offered with the earliest possible starting date for a period of six years pursuant to § 70 Para. 3 and 4 Hessian Higher Education Act (HessHG). According to § 70 Para. 3 HessHG, the applicants (m/f/d) should have gained a doctoral degree at an institution of higher education other than Justus Liebig University Giessen (JLU) or have been in academic employment at an institution other than JLU for at least two years after conferral of a doctoral degree. The duration of applicants’ scientific activity during and after completion of the doctoral degree should not exceed nine years or the duration of activity after the doctorate should not exceed four years. In the case of successful completion of the six-year W1 position, which is to be assessed in an evaluation procedure pursuant to § 70 Para. 2 HessHG, the appointment will be converted into a permanent W2 professorship. Proficient knowledge of German is expected.

Duties:

The successful candidate will be expected to develop concepts in which the health safety of meat, meat products and food of animal origin, zoonosis control and resistance minimization, the improvement of meat quality as well as the optimization and improvement of treatment and processing processes are addressed thematically. The planning and implementation of self-initiated individual and collaborative research is also required, as is participation in graduate training within the framework of the International Giessen Graduate Centre for the Life Sciences (GGL). During your work at JLU, success in the independent acquisition of external funding is expected.

The teaching activities include the organization and implementation of lectures in the field of meat and poultry hygiene. You are expected to develop innovative teaching and learning concepts and to demonstrate knowledge of university didactics.

The professorship should be actively involved in the further profile building of the faculty with its scientific networks and participate in the national and international cooperation of the faculty, for example with partner universities. In addition, cooperation with the fields of Agricultural and Nutritional Sciences and Food Chemistry and Technology at the JLU should take place. Integration of gender aspects in teaching and research is explicitly desired.

Requirements:

The ability to represent the field of meat and poultry hygiene in teaching, research and service in accordance with the TAppV and the study regulations of the faculty is a prerequisite.

A veterinary license is required. Furthermore, the appointed candidate must have a veterinary specialist qualification (meat hygiene and slaughterhouse management, food) or a relevant Diplomate status as well as extensive knowledge in the field of meat and poultry meat hygiene, in particular slaughter technology and hygiene as well as aspects of animal welfare in slaughter animals.

A high degree of willingness to cooperate with other fields at JLU is expected.

In addition, an outstanding relevant doctorate and a special pedagogical aptitude are required.

An internationally recognized research profile in the field of food safety is required. Initial experience in the acquisition of external funding is desirable.

In case the candidate exceeds the basic age limit of 50 years, a civil servant appointment under § 66 Para. 3 sentences 2 and 3 Hessian Higher Education Act (HessHG) in conjunction with § 11 Hessian Career Regulation (HLVO) requires a specific functional interest.
