This taught MSc offers comprehensive training in the theory and practice of environmental geoscience that equips graduates for careers in scientific, engineering and environmental consultancies, natural resources and mining industries, regulatory agencies and research. The vocational programme was established in 2017 in consultation with industry and government agencies to address a significant skills shortage identified in the environmental geoscience sector. The MSc in Applied Environmental Geoscience at UCC combines a core focus of hydrogeology, contaminated land, and engineering geology with advanced modules in applied geophysics, geo-informatics, environmental monitoring and assessment, environmental law and offshore environmental geoscience. A strong emphasis is placed on obtaining 'hands-on' practical experience to develop problem solving skills following international standards in best practice using real-world industry datasets. A distinctive feature of the programme is the delivery of taught components by industry professionals and government agencies including the Geological Survey Ireland and the Irish Environmental Protection Agency. 30 of the 90 credits involve an independent research project usually completed with an industry partner. Founded in 1845, University College Cork was named Irish University of the Year by the Sunday Times on five occasions, is ranked in the top 2% of universities worldwide and the first university in the world to be awarded the international green flag for environmental friendliness. MSc Applied Environmental Geoscience graduates are highly sought after by environmental and engineering consultancies in Ireland, the EU and further afield with demand expected to grow considerably over the coming years. In the first three years of the programme, over 95% of our participants were in full-time employment within three months of completing their degree. Non-EU/EEA students who have graduated from this MSc programme can remain in Ireland for up to 24 months to seek employment through the Irish Government's stay back visa scheme. Candidates with a primary degree in a Geology/Earth Science/Physical Geography/Environmental Science/Civil Engineering or a related relevant degree will be considered.
