The German Center for Lung Research (Deutsches Zentrum für Lungenforschung, DZL) comprises the leading German university-based and non-university lung centers and constitutes a unique translational research center dedicated to perform cutting edge basic science and preclinical and clinical studies in the field of respiratory diseases in a synergistic cooperation between the participating sites and on a nationwide integrated level.

The DZL, site location Universities of Giessen and Marburg Lung Center (UGMLC), the Faculty of Medicine, Justus Liebig University Giessen (JLU), and the University Hospital of Giessen and Marburg GmbH (UKGM), Giessen Campus, invite applications for a

W2 Professorship in Pulmonary Hypertension and Right Ventricular Function

as of now.

Reference is made to § 67 Para. 5 Hessian Higher Education Act (HHG), the non-tariff terms of employment apply, and to the conditions of employment based on § 68 HHG. The appointment of the professorship is limited to five years and goes along with the leadership of a new independent research group. After a period of five years, the professorship can be transformed into a permanent professorship, depending on positive evaluation and financial aspects.

Duties:
The successful applicant will head up an independent translational research group and be responsible for the coordination of translational and clinical research work in the field of pulmonary hypertension and right heart function. Studies will aim to discover fundamental underlying functional mechanisms and provide novel diagnostic and treatment concepts to be investigated in clinical trials, both in chronic pulmonary hypertension patients and under intensive care conditions. The professorship complements and integrates into the overall research concept of the DZL/UGMLC (www.DZL.de) and it will be embedded into the Excellence Cluster “Cardio-Pulmonary Institute”, CPI (www.CPI-online.de). Moreover, the procurement of external funding as well as the willingness to participate in further collaborative projects focusing on lung research and heart-lung interaction at the JLU is expected. The responsibilities in patient care management will focus on diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic pulmonary vascular diseases and right heart failure as well as respiratory insufficiency in outpatient and inpatient clinic, including intensive care unit. These responsibilities will be regulated by a contract with the University Hospital of Giessen and Marburg GmbH (UKGM).

The universities of Giessen and Marburg and the University of Applied Sciences in Central Hessen are working together in a research alliance (Research Campus of Central Hessen) as a structured cooperation based on coordinated priorities. It is expected that the applicant shows cooperativeness to university and department-wide collaborative projects. In particular, cross university/hospital patient-oriented clinical research and the participation in joint clinical studies is expected.

Requirements:
Prerequisites for the position include a successfully completed university education in medicine, documented by board certification, the necessary qualification for scientific work according to § 68 Para. 1 HHG, usually proven by a doctorate with merit, and further pertinent academic achievements (e.g. habilitation or internationally recognized subject-specific publications).

Physician scientist applicants with vast clinical experience in the field of pulmonary and critical care medicine and heart-lung interaction should have a proven, internationally recognized and translationally oriented scientific record relevant for the abovementioned research areas and be able to meet the academic requirements for independent preparation, organization, and conduct of research. A successful history of external funding acquisition, preferably from the DFG, EU or BMBF, as well as experience in national and international collaborations and networking should be given. Furthermore, the applicant should have experience in the training of research fellows, technicians and MD students.
