The Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, Nutritional Sciences, and Environmental Management invites applications for a

W2 Professorship in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology with a focus on Biology of Infection (Heisenberg-Professorship) as of now.

Reference is made to § 61 para. 5 and 6 Hessian Higher Education Act (HHG) and to conditions of employment based on § 62 HHG.

The professorship is established as part of the Heisenberg programme of the German Research Foundation (DFG). A prerequisite for the establishment of the professorship and for the call is the acceptance of the future position holder into the Heisenberg programme of the DFG. Following a positive funding decision, the appointment is initially made on a temporary basis for a period of three years, provided that the requirements under civil law are met. After a positive evaluation, the appointment will be converted into a permanent W2 professorship with the same functional description. Proficient knowledge of German is expected.

The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching courses in biochemistry, molecular biology and closely related disciplines in the Faculty’s Bachelor's and Master's degree programmes, in accordance with the current teaching regulations. We expect a high level of motivation and commitment to teaching and its conceptual development, including the use of e-learning and digital media. We presume your willingness and ability to teach in German and English as well as your active participation in academic self-administration. In research, a forward-looking orientation in the field of biochemistry and molecular biology with a focus on infection biology, in particular the interactions between host and pathogens, is expected. To this end, suitable models, new technologies and genetic research approaches such as CRISPR/Cas, among others, should be successfully applied and/or established/developed.

In addition to the general requirements under civil service law, the requirements for employment include a university degree, pedagogical aptitude, special aptitude for scientific work, which is usually proved by the quality of a doctorate, as well as additional scientific achievements, evidenced, for example, by a habilitation or equivalent scientific achievements. Also required are outstanding and relevant, internationally visible publications in the field. Successful experience in the acquisition and management of externally funded projects as well as in intra- and extra-university research cooperation on a national and international level is also required. In addition, experience in academic teaching of natural scientists (m/f/d) at a university in the subjects of biochemistry, molecular biology, cell biology or related subjects is required.

Collaboration in research and teaching with other research groups of the department and the research networks of the university is expected. In particular, collaboration with members of the Research Campus of Central Hessen (Forschungscampus Mittelhessen) is explicitly desired. Within the framework of its internationalization strategy, the Justus Liebig University Giessen (JLU) strives for corresponding collaborations in research and teaching. Candidates (m/f/d) who already have experience in establishing international/intercultural research and teaching programs are preferred.

In case the candidate exceeds the basic age limit of 50 years, a civil servant appointment under § 60 Para. 3 sentences 2 and 3 Hessian Higher Education Act (HHG) in conjunction with § 11 Hessian Career Regulation (HLVO) requires a specific functional interest.

JLU aims to employ more women in academic research. We therefore particularly encourage female candidates to apply. JLU also pursues the goal at faculty leadership level of increased competence in dealing with gender and family-related issues. JLU is regarded as a family-friendly university. Applicants with children are very welcome. Applications from disabled people of equal aptitude will be given preference.

Please send your letter of application (no e-mails, please) with a CV and a documentation of your qualifications and teaching competence to: The President of Justus Liebig University Giessen, Erwin-Stein-Gebaeude, Goethestrasse 58, 35390 Giessen, Germany, quoting reference number 9-11/21. Applications must be received by October 21st, 2021 at the latest. Candidates are strongly recommended to refer to our webpage on application Please only submit copies of your application documents without document files or folders, as they cannot be returned after the application procedure has been completed.
