Temporary Externally Funded Non Grant-in-Aid contract post, the indicative duration of which is 6 months, subject to contract. A panel may be formed from which future similar vacancies may be filled; such a panel will remain active for a maximum period of 12 months.
This Technician will be involved in the Pre-Oligo project, and will work as part of a team focusing on the development of the next generation of prebiotics. This particular role will involve the isolation of oligosaccharide ingredients from various milks and assessing their potential as substrates that specifically enhance the growth of health promoting microbes within the gut.
Experience in microbiology, food science, or carbohydrate extraction is relevant to the role.
The appointee will also analyse the different oligosaccharides using HPLC.
Fractionate different milk streams to isolate milk oligosaccharides.
Understand microbial fermentation and associated chemical pathways/mode of action.
Perform growth curves with milk oligosaccharides and commercial probiotics
Determine predominate oligosaccharide structures using HPLC techniques.
Mentor and assist students and early-stage researchers in the research group.
Health & Safety Co-ordinator Duties or such other Health & Safety Duties as may be assigned from time to time.
To assist Teagasc in meeting the commitments of the Quality Customer Service Charter and Action Plan.
To actively participate in the annual business planning and Performance Management Development System (PMDS) processes.
Fully co-operate with the provisions made for ensuring the health, safety and welfare of themselves, fellow staff and non-Teagasc staff and co-operate with management in enabling Teagasc to comply with legal obligations.

- Candidates must have a Level 6 in biotechnology, microbiology, biochemistry, nutrition or a related discipline or a related discipline.
- A Level 7 qualification in biotechnology would be a distinct advantage
