The Faculty of Language, Literature, Culture invites applications for a
W1 Professorship (with W2 tenure track) in Romance Linguistics
and Cultural Studies (Spanish and Portuguese)
The Position is offered from April 1st, 2022 for a period of six years pursuant to § 64 Para. 3 and 4 Hessian Higher Education Act (HHG). According to § 64 Para. 3 HHG, the applicant should have gained a doctoral degree at an institution of higher education other than Justus Liebig University Giessen (JLU) or have been in academic employment at an institution other than JLU for at least two years after conferral of a doctoral degree. The duration of said postdoctoral employment may not exceed four years or, in the case of successful completion of further academic training pursuant to § 62 Para. 6 HHG, may not exceed seven years. In the case of successful completion of the six-year W1 position, which is to be assessed in an evaluation procedure pursuant to § 64 Para. 2 HHG, the appointment will be converted into a permanent W2 professorship. Proficient knowledge of German language is expected.
The future holder of the position is expected to represent the full breadth of the discipline in research and teaching. The professorship shall perform all general teaching and examination duties in the relevant teacher training, bachelor’s and master’s degree modules. The professorship shall participate in the further development of the offered range of courses. During the employment at JLU, the professorship is expected to independently raise external funding.
Furthermore, willingness is expected to actively participate in the JLU’s Giessen Graduate Centre for Humanities (GGK), International Graduate Centre for the Study of Culture (GCSC), Centre for Media and Interactivity (ZMI), and Teacher Training Centre (ZfL) as well as in the Research Network Educational Linguistics (EL) at JLU.
The professorship should actively participate in relevant international cooperation of the university and use their own international connections to further the JLU’s international profile.
Willingness to contribute to the further development of accent areas of the faculty as well as active academic networking within JLU are desired.
The integration of gender aspects in research and teaching is desired.
Prerequisites for application are a completed university degree in the field of Romance studies , relevant teaching experience in Romance linguistics, and a special aptitude for scientific work as demonstrated by the outstanding quality of a doctorate in Spanish or Portuguese linguistics. Research focus areas in Spanish and Portuguese linguistics with a cultural studies orientation are required, both in theoretical and applied linguistics (e.g., in the areas of sociolinguistics, transculturality and multilingualism, language and economics, language and media). An additional research focus on Spanish and/or Portuguese in the non-European area is desirable. International experience as well as initial experience in the acquisition of external funding is also desired.
In case the candidate exceeds the basic age limit of 50 years, a civil servant appointment under § 60 Para. 3 sentences 2 and 3 Hessian Higher Education Act (HHG) in conjunction with § 11 Hessian Career Regulation (HLVO) requires a specific functional interest.
