As a part of the Quality Campaign for Teacher Training, the Faculty of Social Sciences and Cultural Studies invites applications for a

W3 Professorship in Educational Science with a focus on Research on Teacher Training as of now.

Reference is made to § 61 Para. 7 Hessian Higher Education Act (HHG) and to conditions of employment based on § 62 HHG. Proficient knowledge of German is expected.

The successful candidate will be responsible for representing the field of educational science/teacher training to its full breadth in research and teaching. The professorship will specialise in empirical research in teacher training relating to the didactics of higher education. The applicant will assume responsibilities relating to the concept of the Giessen Campaign for Teacher Training: Participation in Learning, Reflexivity, Networking: teachers making a difference – the university making a difference (Gießener Offensive Lehrerbildung; GOL). With this focus, the Justus Liebig University Giessen (JLU) strives to improve its teacher training programme, to further develop its research mandate in higher education training at the Teacher Training Centre (Zentrum für Lehrerbildung, ZfL), and to strengthen its focus on empirical research in teaching and training. The professorship will include research activities relating to higher education training with an empirical basis and with national and international focus. The professorship will appeal to those with an active interest in international collaborative research.

The professorship will be based out of the Institute of School Education and Didactics of Social Sciences and will provide teaching together with the other professorships in the department for training in all teacher training programmes as well as in associated fields of study (BA, MA, Ph.D.). A willingness to collaborate in teaching training programmes across disciplines is required. The successful candidate will likewise be actively involved in the development of competencies by young researchers in empirical research methods [including through the ZfL and the Giessen Graduate Centre for Social Sciences, Economics and Law (Gießener Graduiertenzentrum Sozial-, Wirtschafts- und Rechtswissenschaften; GGS)] and in teacher trainings. Integration of gender aspects in research and teaching is strongly encouraged.

An active interest in interdisciplinary and internationally networked empirical research is expected. Publications in national and international journals as well as independent success in acquiring peer-reviewed external funding (preferably German Research Foundation, DFG) are also required. The ability to teach in English is also a welcome bonus.

In accordance with § 62 Para. 4 HHG, proof of three years of practical experience in school teaching is regarded a requirement for a position with responsibilities concerning school pedagogy, teaching methodology or educational sciences.

In case the candidate exceeds the basic age limit of 50 years, a civil servant appointment under § 60 Para. 3 sentences 2 and 3 Hessian Higher Education Act (HHG) in conjunction with § 11 Hessian Career Regulation (HLVO) requires a specific functional interest.

JLU aims to employ more women in academic research. We therefore particularly encourage female candidates to apply. JLU also pursues the goal at faculty leadership level of increased competence in dealing with gender and family-related issues. JLU is regarded as a family-friendly university. Applicants with children are very welcome. Applications from disabled people of equal aptitude will be given preference.

Please send your letter of application (no e-mails, please) with a CV and a documentation of your qualifications and teaching competence to: The President of Justus Liebig University Giessen, Erwin-Stein-Gebaeude, Goethestrasse 58, 35390 Giessen, Germany, quoting reference number 3-07/21.
