The Role

Maynooth University seeks an outstanding academic to join our staff as Professor of Electronic Engineering, with a specialism in robotics and intelligent systems. The person appointed will have an excellent record in research, scholarship and publication, in teaching and educational innovation, and in academic leadership. She/he will be expected to make a strong contribution to the teaching, research and profile of the university, and to provide leadership in the area of robotics and intelligent systems.

Applications are welcomed from outstanding researchers with a track record of high achievement in robotics, mechatronics and/or related intelligent systems. In particular, the ideal candidate will assist the Department in its strategic objective to grow the area of robotics and intelligent devices, through funded research and continuing development of academic programmes.

Principal Responsibilities

A Professor of the University is expected to:
  • Be an international leader in research and scholarship and contribute to the advancement of knowledge in the field;
  • Provide leadership in research and scholarship within the Department, Faculty and University;
  • Promote excellence in teaching and learning, and encourage innovation in teaching and learning amongst staff;
  • Contribute to the teaching of undergraduate and postgraduate students, including lecturing, consultations with individual students, and supervision of research students;
  • Assume responsibilities for related management and administrative tasks associated with the Department, Faculty and University;
  • Be an active member of the University and contribute to the work of the University in outreach, collaboration, internationalisation, engagement and policy development. .

Professors of the University are required to serve as Head of Department when requested to do so by the President. The person appointed to this role will be expected to serve as Head of Department for an initial period of five years at an appropriate time, and possibly for further periods thereafter, as determined by the President.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • An outstanding record of research and scholarship, reflected in an excellent publication profile;
  • An outstanding academic record as a university teacher and an educational innovator;
  • The capacity to offer strong academic leadership within the discipline of electronic engineering, the department and across the University;
  • Demonstrated management and administrative skills;
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills;
  • The ability to build effective relationships with a wide variety of internal and external colleagues.
The University

Faculty and Research Institutes

The Faculty of Science and Engineering comprises eight academic departments and is associated with a range of research institutes and centres, including the multidisciplinary Hamilton Institute, the Kathleen Lonsdale Institute for Human Health Research, the National Centre for Geocomputation, the ALL Institute (Assisting Living and Learning), the ICARUS Climate Research Centre and the Centre for Ocean Energy Research. Aspects of robotics research are relevant to a range of activities underway in the research institutes, including spatial mapping (using drones), assisted living, as well as fundamental work in machine vision, robotics and machine learning.

Department of Electronic Engineering

The Department of Electronic Engineering was established in 1999 and operates within the rich and diverse electronic engineering sector in Ireland. The Department offers accredited undergraduate degrees in electronic engineering. In addition, in partnership with the Department of Computer Science, the Department offers a BSc degree programme in Robotics and Intelligent Devices. The Department also provides a Masters programme in Electronic Engineering (Embedded and Wireless Systems).

The Department of Electronic Engineering has a vibrant research activity with over 30 PhD students working in the areas of control and dynamical systems, ocean energy systems, radio and wireless communications, analog and digital signal processing, microelectronics, and biomedical engineering. There is also significant activity in the area of robotics research, and the department has recently set up a dedicated robotics lab, containing a PAL TIAGo mobile manipulator and a Rethink Sawyer cobot. Active research areas include collaborative autonomy, collaborative dense SLAM, cloud enhanced robotics, and service robotics for healthy ageing in place. The University also regularly sends a team to the international RoboCup competition, competing in the Standard Platform class (Nao robots), with recent wins in both the International Robocup and Robocup Open Challenge.

Selection and Appointment

  • Only shortlisted candidates will be invited to attend for interview;
  • Shortlisted candidates will be required to make a brief presentation to staff within the University as
  • part of the selection process;
  • Appointments will be made by the President based on the report of the selection board;
  • It is anticipated that interviews will be held in January 2021;
  • The appointment is expected to be effective from 1st June 2021.

Terms and Conditions

The appointment will be made at Professorial level, of which there are two: Professor A and Professor B. The professorship will be a permanent appointment to the academic staff and subject to the Statutes of the University.

Professor A (Post 1995): €120,273 – €154,504 p.a. (6 points)
Professor B (Post 1995): €87,840 – €116,521 p.a. (6 points)

Appointments will be made in accordance with the Department of Finance pay guidelines.

The decision to appoint as Professor A or Professor B is made by the President based on the report of the Selection Panel and the experience and track record of the successful candidate. To be appointed at Professor A level, the successful candidate will have an excellent record of published work of international quality and demonstrated leadership in their field, will be an excellent teacher and academic innovator, and will normally have experience and demonstrated capacity in administrative as well as academic leadership.
