At the Faculty of Physics and Earth Sciences the following tenure track professorship funded by the Tenure Track Programme of the German Federal Government and the Federal States has to be filled starting on 1st of April 2021

W2- Professorship Mathematical Physics (with tenure track leading to W3)


We are looking for a dedicated researcher who is interested in recent developments in the field of Mathematical Physics, preferably in the areas quantum many body systems, gravitation, quantum information theory, or quantum field theory. Teaching in mathematical and theoretical physics in bachelor and master courses as well as in a compulsory elective course has to be covered. Involvement in our newly established international master course mathematical physics“ is very desirable. This includes supervision of main student- and working group seminars as well as B.Sc., M.Sc. and Ph.D. theses and the corresponding module examinations as well as exams according to the doctoral regulations. Participation in university committees is expected./p>


The applicant should be distinguished by relevant scientific work in the scientific field described above, as well as by the willingness to cooperate with colleagues working in theoretical physics as well as with mathematically oriented colleagues, including members of our institute for mathematics/computer science. Very good skills in written and spoken English are desirable to cover our programs taught in English./p>

Academic context

The Max-Planck-Society is supporting the „Cooperation to strengthen Mathematical Physics“ (M.FE.A.MATN0003) between the Institute for Theoretical Physics, the Mathematical Institute at the University of Leipzig, as well as the Max-Planck-Institute for Mathematics in the Sciences (MPI MiS) in Leipzig. Applicants that could form a link are particularly welcome. We are interested in principle to integrate this professorship into established career building strategies at MPI-MiS and to thereby provide means to extend or consolidate the research group. The successful applicant can profit furthermore from existing doctoral schools (GRK 2522/1-Strong Dynamics and Criticality in Quantum and Gravitational Systems“, International Max-Planck Research School am MPI-MiS)./p>

Our offer

The tenure track professorship is limited to six years. No later than five years after employment commences, a tenure evaluation will be conducted under the Regulations on the Constitution, Procedure and Evaluation of Tenure Track Professorships at Leipzig University (TTO). The evaluation procedure is based on a binding, mutual evaluation agreement concluded at the start of employment, which sets out the development goals and expectations with regard to the professor’s individual performance in the categories of research, teaching, knowledge transfer as well as academic and non-university commitment. After successful tenure evaluation, appointment to a permanent W3 professorship pursuant to Section 59 (3,1 no. 1) of the Saxon Freedom of Higher Education Act (SächsHSFG) will take place without readvertising the vacancy.

Rights and obligations of the jobholder are within the SächsHSFG and the Saxonian public service task regulation (Sächsische Dienstaufgabenverordnung, DAVOHS). Applicants must meet the requirements of § 58 SächsHSFG. The tenure track professorship is considered a position for early career stage. Applicants should have changed universities after completing their doctorate or have been academically active outside the University of Leipzig for at least two years. They should have completed their doctorate no more than four years ago.

Purpose and legal basis of the processing of personal data:

Personal data storage period:

The duration of the storage of personal data is governed by Sect. 11(4) of the Saxon Data Protection Implementation Act (SächsDSDG). This stipulates that data collected prior to the commencement of a service or employment relationship must be erased without undue delay as soon as it is established that a service or employment relationship will not be established. This does not apply if there is reason to believe that the erasure would harm the legitimate interests of the data subject.
