The Professorship is with the Faculty of History and Cultural Studies.
Reference is made to § 61 Para. 7 Hessian Higher Education Act (HHG) and to conditions of employment based on § 62 HHG. Proficient knowledge of German is expected.
The prospective holder of the position will represent the subject of South-Eastern European History across its entire range. One focus will be on South Slavic History; further focus areas on the History of the Ottoman Empire or rather Turkey are very desirable.
Applicants are required to address the History of South-Eastern Europe in lectures in its entire spatial (especially the History of the South Slavic Balkan countries, Ottoman and Turkish History) and temporal scope (addressing the various epochs of the Middle Ages through contemporary history).
Lectures must be offered in the teacher training courses for the subject of History and in the BA and MA courses in History and Cultural Studies in the major and minor subjects History and Eastern European History as well as Turcology.
Moreover, courses in interdisciplinary studies on Eastern Europe are also required in the master’s course.
The willingness to take a leading role in interdisciplinary course formats and to organize interdisciplinary courses within the frame of the Giessen Center for Eastern Europe (GiZo) and the interdisciplinary study programs at Justus Liebig University Giessen (JLU) is expected.
Participation in the GiZo and in the area of potential “Culture – Conflict – Security” (focus on Eastern Europe) is expected, which is of particular importance for the formation of research profiles at the JLU’s Humanities and Social Sciences departments.
Participation in the International Graduate Centre for the Study of Culture (GCSC) is also desirable.
Moreover, the professorship is to participate in the department’s relevant international collaborations and make use of its own international connections to further the international profile of the Historical Institute.

The applicant must be well established in the field of South-Eastern European History.
A focus on South Slavic History is expected; a focus on the History of the Ottoman Empire or rather Turkey is very desirable.
A relevant university degree, an outstanding doctorate and further academic achievements, as well as teaching experience and pedagogical aptitude, are required.
Relevant, international publications, as well as successes in the independent acquisition of external funds, are also expected.
