The Faculty of History and Cultural Studies invites applications for a
W3 Professorship in Modern History (19th and 20th centuries)
as of now.
Reference is made to § 61 Para. 7 Hessian Higher Education Act (HHG) and to conditions of employment based on § 62 HHG. Proficient knowledge of German is expected.
The professorship’s primary focus is on the “long” 19th century, which the prospective holder of the position will represent in research and teaching across its entire range.
Lectures are to be provided for the various BA and MA courses as well as for the teaching degree courses at the Historical Institute. Participation in the International Graduate Centre for the Study of Culture (GCSC) and the Centre for Media and Interactivity (ZMI) at Justus Liebig University Giessen (JLU) as well as in the area of potential “Culture – Conflict – Security”, which is of particular importance for the development of research profiles at the Humanities and Social Sciences departments at JLU, is expected.
Moreover, the professorship is to participate in the department’s relevant international collaborations and make use of its own international connections to further the international profile of the Historical Institute.

Applicants must be well established in the field of the German and transnational (either Western European or colonial) History of the 19th and early 20th centuries.
The academic theses (apart from the doctorate further scientific achievements (e.g., habilitation)) are supposed to focus on these fields and be associated with the realm of Modern History.
Success in the independent acquisition of external funds is also expected.
