The Faculty of Biology and Chemistry invites applications for a

W3 Professorship in Biology Didactics as of April 1st, 2021

Reference is made to § 61 Para. 7 Hessian Higher Education Act (HHG) and to conditions of employment based on § 62 HHG.

Proficient knowledge of German is expected.


The future job holder’s teaching duties will cover the entire field of biology didactics in all courses involving the Institute for Biology Didactics.

(This includes teacher degree programmes offering biology and primary school education programmes offering science subjects, bachelor and master courses in biology and courses in other faculties, in particular in the degree course for vocational and educational training).

The position holder will also assume teaching duties in the “human biology” degree module (a lecture entailing 2 hours/week (SWS) per academic year).

Active cooperation with the Centre for Teacher Training and involvement in the coordination and development of teacher training courses in biology is expected.

Candidates should be willing to actively engage in joint research projects with the life science and natural science departments of didactics at the Justus Liebig University Giessen (JLU) and participate in JLU’s graduate education.

Integration of gender aspects in research and teaching and the further development of the faculty’s international profile are desirable.

Active involvement in the development of the School Laboratory for Biology and the Hermann Hoffmann Academy are expected, as is the establishment and participation in new teaching courses and teacher training programmes.


A degree in biology (diploma, master or state examination), an excellent doctorate in biology or didactics of biology and outstanding teaching skills are required.

The ideal candidate should possess proven research experience in a field of didactic biology, preferably in empirical teaching/learning research.

Pertinent publications, ideally in reputable international journals, and the successful and independent acquisition of peer-reviewed external funding are also expected.

International cooperation experience would be an asset.

In accordance with § 62 Para. 4 HHG, proof three years of practical experience in school teaching is regarded as a requirement for a position with responsibilities concerning school pedagogy, teaching methodology or educational sciences.
