JOB TITLE:

Teagasc Technologist - Bio-Based Plastic (Temporary) (Ref: 116)

BASIC FUNCTION:

The Irish Agriculture and Food Development Authority is seeking to fill a short term position at Teagasc Food Research Centre Ashtown for a process technologist.

We are seeking to recruit a competent, driven and enthusiastic Contract Technologist who will have a key role in delivering the objectives of the NovelHaemPack project which is funded by DAFM.

He/she will be responsible for designing experiments, conducting research, recording and collating and transferring data and reporting on the project.

He/She will assist with managing supplies, preparing SOPs etc and discussions with relevant stakeholders.

They will communicate in a clear and effective manner with the research team.

JOB OBJECTIVES:

Generation of bio-based film from blood proteins both using existing methods and through the development of new methods.

Characterization of using film properties to give a more comprehensive understanding of, among others, the mechanical properties, barrier capability, biodegradability, thermo-mechanical properties.

Assess continuous process techniques for haemoglobin/protein based film production e.g. extrusion, cast-tape drying.

Testing selected protein-based films in real food scenarios.

Assist in laboratory management and contribute to the development of standard operating procedures, risk assessment etc.

Reviewing the literature and keeping up to date with relevant scientific and technical developments.

PERSON SPECIFICATION:

ESSENTIAL:

Candidates must have an honours Level 8 degree in Chemistry, Material Engineering, Biochemistry or a related discipline.

DESIRABLE:

A postgraduate degree and/or research experience in (Chemistry, Material Engineering, Biochemistry) would be a distinct advantage.
