Teagasc Post-Doctoral Research Fellow Level 1 (PD1) Environmental Economics/Socio-Economic research/Ecology PD1/FE/0719
The FaRMEcoS project will identify and outline the evidence base for novel, cost-effective measures to protect and enhance farmland biodiversity.
An important requirement to ensure appropriate targeting of novel ecological measures is to determine the quantity and quality of existing biodiversity features across the dominant farm enterprises and intensities.
In Ireland, there have been a number of studies that have incorporated habitat surveys of farmland, and methodologies to rapidly assess habitat quantity.
The proposed study will include analysis of existing datasets and assess the suitability of existing rapid assessment methodologies for a variety of farming enterprises and intensities.
This process will help assess the current state of knowledge and will also determine the number of new farm habitat surveys that are required in order to have a representative sample of each farm category within the selected research regions.
Duties & Responsibilities specific to this project:
Utilise existing bespoke Teagasc farm socio-economic and habitat survey data to assess the farm demographic, spatial and attitudinal drivers of choice of biodiversity measures.
Assess the cost of associated biodiversity measure implementation on farms of different types using Teagasc survey and expert judgement.
Utilise spatial analysis to impute biodiversity measures on farms by combining Teagasc farm biodiversity survey data, spatial data and catchment models to estimate the benefit of biodiversity measure implementation.
PhD in Economics, Environmental Economics, Social Sciences, Ecology, Geography or associated disciplines.
Relevant research experience not to exceed 3 years post-PhD.
Agri-environment sectoral and policy knowledge.
