Job Title: Contract Research Officer Food Digestion(Ref: CRO/GH/MP/0719)(Externally Funded Non Grant-in-Aid)
Teagasc is now seeking to recruit a highly motivated, ambitious scientist with experience in cell culture to an industry-funded project.
The successful candidate will be part of a vibrant multidisciplinary team to assess the health benefits to the gut, of various food ingredients and products.
The successful candidate will perform in vitro gastrointestinal digestion of the food samples and then assess these samples for their ability to promote gut health.
Gut health biomarkers will include intestinal barrier health (differentiated Caco2 monolayers), gut immune modulation and satiety hormone production.
The successful candidate will be a creative, independent thinker with willingness to learn and acquire new skills in cell culture and bioassay development.
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
Perform in vitro gastrointestinal digestion of ingredients and products.
Perform culture differentiation of Caco2 monolayers and/or Caco2-HT29 co-cultures as a model of the intestinal barrier.
Perform a range of bioassays including satiety and immune modulation assays.
Produce data of excellent scientific quality in terms of precision, accuracy and verifiability.
Interpret research findings and critically analyze and evaluate ones findings and those of others.
Write clearly and concisely producing well-structured and comprehensive reports.
Apply effective project management through the setting of research goals, intermediate milestones and prioritization of activities.
Assist Teagasc in meeting the commitments of the Quality Customer Service charter and action plan.
Actively participate in the annual business planning and Performance Management Development System (PMDS) processes.
Candidates must have an honours Level 8 degree in Biochemistry, Cell Biology or a related discipline.
A postgraduate degree and/or research experience in Cell culture, ELISA, mRNA quantification, Western blots would be a distinct advantage.
