Research Officer - Microbial Populations

Title: Contract Research Officer - Microbial Populations (Ref: CRO/APC/0719) (Externally Funded Non Grant-in-Aid)

Basic Function:

This position will be filled by a researcher with a qualification in microbiology, molecular biology or a related discipline. The primary role will be culture dependent and culture independent (DNA sequencing-based) analysis of microbial populations.

Experience in analysing high throughput DNA sequencing data would be an advantage. Ultimately, the successful candidate will perform assessments of specific foods and food ingredients to assess their ability to impact on health.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

• Perform traditional, culture-based analysis of foods and food ingredients.
• Extract microbial DNA.
• Prepare material for high throughput DNA sequencing.
• Perform biochemical characterization of foods and gut metabolites.
• Liaise with the company sponsoring the research.
• Work closely with other team members within the project.
• Produce data of excellent scientific quality in terms of precision, accuracy and verifiability.
• Interpret research findings and critically analyze and evaluate one’s findings and those of others.
• Write clearly and concisely producing well structure and comprehensive reports.
• Apply effective project management through the setting of research goals, intermediate milestones and prioritization of activities.

Person Specification


• Candidates must have an honours Level 8 degree in a science discipline.


• A postgraduate degree and/or research experience in microbiology, molecular biology or a related discipline.
