Full Job Title: Teagasc Post-Doctoral Research Fellow Level 1 - Agri-environmental science, agronomy (Ref: PD1/RR/JC/0619)
Basic Function of the post:
The basic functions of this post are to investigate and report on the nature and sources of nutrient (N & P) losses from on-farm roadways.
This includes conducting research across a number of pilot farms in collaboration with farmers and project scientists. The post will involve carrying out farm surveys of roadways and their connectivity to dry ditches and watercourses.
This information will be collated using spatial analysis (GIS) and used to design a visual roadway assessment tool. The post will also involve reviewing current literature on roadway runoff diversion measures and mitigation, elucidation and quantification of roadway load losses, diversion and treatment of such losses at a pilot site.
This will then be used to refine farm roadway design specifications.
Duties & Responsibilities specific to this project:
Engage with Teagasc researchers and advisors to select a number of pilot farms that cross a range of soil and landscape conditions.
Engage with pilot farmers, conduct a farm roadway survey and roadway connectivity to dry ditches and watercourses and compile this information using GIS dataset on soils.
Design a visual farm roadway assessment tool to be used by farmers and advisors.
Conduct a literature review on nutrient losses on farm roadways, farm roadway runoff diversion techniques and in-situ nutrient mitigation options.
Select a pilot farm based on farm roadway mapping and elucidate nutrient loads at a number of hotspots, divert and treat such losses using options chosen from the literature review.
Deliver a farm roadway specification guideline document which includes breaking farm roadway connectivity to dry ditches and watercourses.
PhD in agriculture, environmental science, soil science, geography.
Relevant research experience not to exceed 3 years post-PhD.
Experience in field work and GIS analysis.
Experience in setting own research agenda.
