In the framework of the Hessian University Competence Centre for Hospital Hygiene (HuKKH), the Department of Hygiene and Environmental Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, invites applications for a
W1 Professorship in Genome-based Surveillance and Epidemiology of
at the earliest possible date for a period of four years. Reference is made to § 64 Para. 5 of the Hessian Higher Education Act (HHG), the non-tariff terms of employment apply. According to § 64 Para. 3 HHG, the applicant should have gained a doctoral degree at an institution of higher education other than Justus Liebig University Giessen (JLU) or have been in academic employment at an institution other than JLU for at least two years after conferral of a doctoral degree. The duration of said post-doctoral employment may not exceed four years or, in the case of successful completion of further academic training pursuant to § 62 Para. 6 HHG, may not exceed seven years. Proficient knowledge of German is expected.
On the basis of the Innovation and Structure Development Plan, the State of Hesse has established a “Hessian University Competence Centre for Hospital Hygiene” (HKKH) at its sites in Frankfurt am Main (Goethe-University, University Hospital), Giessen (Justus-Liebig-University, University Hospital) and Marburg (Philips-University Marburg, University Hospital). The W1 professorship will be located at the Justus-Liebig-University Giessen (JLU) in the Department of Hygiene and Environmental Medicine and will be closely associated with the Department of Medical Microbiology.
The future incumbent will have the responsibility to represent the full spectrum of the subject in research and teaching as well as supervision of doctoral students. The duties also include the establishment of a multi-resistant pathogen bank in collaboration with the Frankfurt and Marburg campuses; whole genome sequencing (WGS) of bacterial pathogens from said multi-resistant pathogen bank; functional analyses of the pathogens with respect to virulence potential; overarching analysis of genomic, epidemiologic, functional and clinical data in order to generate scoring systems to classify pathogens regarding their relevance to hospitals and/or public health; integration of the scoring systems into diagnostic stewardship, antibiotic stewardship and infection control measures in line with hospital hygiene, and the development of diagnostic tests to evaluate pathogens with regard to clinical, epidemiologic and hygienic aspects. The duties are to be carried out in the framework of the Competence Centre in collaboration with the partners of the three Hessian universities.
The universities of Giessen and Marburg and the University of Applied Sciences in Central Hessen are working together in a research alliance (Research Campus of Central Hessen) as a structured cooperation based on coordinated priorities. It is expected that the applicant shows cooperativeness to university and department-wide collaborative projects. In particular, cross university/hospital patient-oriented clinical research and the participation in joint clinical studies is expected.
Close cooperation within existing foci of the faculty – cardiopulmonary system, infection, inflammation and immunity as well as reproduction and reparation/regeneration – is required. The applicant should become actively involved in existing collaborative projects and be responsible for organising research projects and new collaborative associations and national and international networks. Cooperation in the International Giessen Graduate Centre for the Life Sciences (GGL) is expected. During employment at JLU, the future incumbent will be expected to publish in renowned national and international peer-reviewed journals and be responsible for securing external funding for projects (preferably from the German Research Foundation).
The applicant is expected to have completed full university education in medicine or in the natural sciences, a doctorate with merit, thorough experience in the fields of bacterial genomics and bioinformatics and internationally visible publications focusing on multi-resistant bacteria. The applicant should have the ability to work on interdisciplinary projects. First experiences with the acquision of external funding are desirable. The future incumbent should have proof of particular pedagogic aptitude as a necessary qualification to represent the full spectrum of the subject area in academic teaching with great commitment. Gender issues should be integrated into the research and teaching agenda.
