Teagasc Post Doctoral Research Fellow Level 1 - Food BioSciences (Ref: PD1/CH/AT/1018)

Basic Function of the post:
The specific emphasis of this study is to assess the impact of mineral extracts on CHO (Chinese Hamster Ovary) and mitochondrial health (both qualitative and quantitative improvements). In addition, the use of pelagic by-product collagen/gelatine and gelatine hydrolysates as support matrices will be assessed along with the potential health benefits of these products on CHO cells, primary human cells (endothelial cells) and human adult prohenitor cells, studying mitochondrial/metabolic health in these cell types.

Duties & Responsibilities specific to this project:
• Draft a literature review concerning by-product utilisation and potential of marine ingredients to impact on cell health.
• Extract and characterise source materials, extracts and novel products.
• Perform cell culture assays in line with the project objectives.
• Evaluate potential applications of mineral and gelatine extracts and products and identify market opportunities and limitations for these products.
• Work in conjunction with the PI on a report at the end of the project.
• Present research results in written and oral form.

Person Specification

Essential
• PhD in Microbiology, Immunology, Food, Food Engineering, Microbiology, Chemistry or a related discipline.
• Relevant research experience not to exceed 3 years’ post-PhD.

Desirable
• Experience in chemistry.
• Experience in setting own research agenda.
