Basic Function of the post:
The successful candidate will be responsible for the day to day running of an externally funded multidisciplinary project examining the fundamental soil chemistry governing the bioavailability of cadmium in tillage soil and its uptake by agricultural and horticultural crop species. This understanding will be used to optimise soil risk prediction models and develop strategies to remediate higher risk soils both through short and longer term strategies.
Duties & Responsibilities specific to this project:
Drive the daily operation of the project, interact with and co-ordinate activities of project partners, assist the Project Coordinator with the overall running of the project and with the completion of progress reports.
Devise, design and perform laboratory, glasshouse and field-based experiments to understand the factors governing the uptake of cadmium into crop plants.
Develop strategies and advice for mitigation that can be disseminated to stakeholders.
Coordinate with partner research groups that are developing novel detection systems to supply samples and contribute to the optimisation of these new systems.
Pursue the publication of results in peer reviewed scientific literature.
Contribute to the supervision of several multi-disciplinary PhD students assigned to the project.
PhD in one of the following areas, agriculture, agronomy, plant sciences, plant biology, soil chemistry or a related discipline.
Relevant research experience not to exceed 3 years post-PhD.
A postgraduate degree and/or research experience concerning heavy metals (specifically cadmium) contamination of crop species would be a distinct advantage.
Specific knowledge of heavy metal interactions between the soil and plants and an understanding of current food safety legislation regarding heavy metal contamination of crop plants.
