W3 Professorship in Heart Surgery with a focus on Adult Heart Transplantation and Heart Support Procedures
as of now.
Reference is made to § 61 Para. 7 of the Hessian Higher Education Act (HHG), the non-tariff terms of employment apply, and to conditions of employment based on § 62 HHG. Proficient knowledge of German is expected.
The duties of the successful candidate will include representation of the whole scope of the subject in teaching and research, supervision of doctoral students and patient care. The future incumbent will assume leadership of the Department of Heart Surgery at the Kerckhoff-Klinik GmbH, Bad Nauheim. The candidate must have specialized in heart surgery; additional training in intensive medicine for heart surgery is desirable. The responsibilities connected to the professorship with respect to leadership of clinical units will be regulated by a detailed senior-consultant contract with the Kerckhoff-Klinik GmbH. The successful candidate must have pertinent experience, in particular in the area of staff leadership and management.
The scientific research focus should preferably be on adult heart transplantation and on modern heart support procedures. The future incumbent must be in a position to represent the entire clinical spectrum of heart surgery. The successful candidate should have international recognition in his/her specialization and hold an outstanding scientific qualification. During employment at JLU, the future incumbent will be expected to publish in renowned national and international peer-reviewed journals and be responsible for securing external funding for projects (preferably from the German Research Foundation). Close cooperation is required within the existing foci of the faculty – cardio-pulmonary system, infection and immunology, as well as reproduction and regeneration, also with the Collaborative Research Centre CRC 1213 “Pulmonary Hypertension and Cor Pulmonale”. In particular, there must be involvement in the Excellence Cluster Cardio-Pulmonary System (ECCPS). Active participation in the German Centre for Cardiovascular Research (Deutsches Zentrum für Herz-Kreislauf-Forschung e.V.) at Partner Site Rhine-Main (situated at Kerckhoff-Klinik) and involvement in the International Giessen Graduate Centre for the Life Sciences (GGL) are expected.
The research duties of the future incumbent include planning and conducting clinical studies in the field of heart surgery with a special focus on adult heart transplantation and heart support procedures and/or modern operation techniques in heart surgery. International recognition of expertise in this area is desirable. Involvement in translational research activities in close cooperation with experimental researchers at the Bad Nauheim campus and in Giessen is also desirable.
The universities of Giessen and Marburg and the University of Applied Sciences in Central Hessen are working together in a research alliance (Research Campus of Central Hessen) as a structured cooperation based on coordinated priorities. It is expected that the applicant shows cooperativeness to university and department-wide collaborative projects. In particular, cross university/hospital patient-oriented clinical research and the participation in joint clinical studies is expected.
The future incumbent must possess far-reaching management skills. Leadership of the department must be guided by the principles of the mission statement of the Kerckhoff-Klinik. The successful applicant is capable of taking over training and further training of young doctors as well as leading the Department of Heart Surgery in close cooperation with the directors and clinic management. The care processes based on an interdisciplinary and inter-professional structure will continue to be developed by the future incumbent with an emphasis on quality and the patient while maintaining cost-effectiveness.
The following qualifications are required: Full university education in medicine, a doctorate with merit and other pertinent academic achievements (e.g. habilitation (post-doctoral thesis with entitlement to teach at university level as a professor) or publications in the field of specialization in international journals), experience and success in obtaining extramural funding and, furthermore, proof of particular pedagogic aptitude as a necessary qualification to represent the specialist field in academic teaching with great commitment. Gender issues should be integrated into the professorship’s research and teaching agenda.
