Basic Function of the post:
The FarmECOS project will identify and outline the evidence base for novel, cost-effective measures to protect and enhance farmland biodiversity.
The selected candidate will be responsible for the determination of the cost-effectiveness of measures for protecting and enhancing biodiversity on Irish farms, for assessing farmer attitudes to the design, cost and implementation of measures to protect and enhance biodiversity within agri-ecosystems and to determine the non-market value of farm-level measures to protect and enhance biodiversity.

Duties & Responsibilities specific to this project:

• Utilise existing Teagasc farm socio-economic and biodiversity survey data to assess the farm demographic, spatial and attitudinal drivers of choice of biodiversity measures.
• Assess the cost of associated biodiversity measure implementation on farms of different types using Teagasc survey and expert judgement.
• Utilise spatial analysis to impute biodiversity measures on farms by combining Teagasc farm biodiversity survey data, spatial data and catchment models to estimate the benefit of biodiversity measure implementation.
• Work with sectoral and subject experts to map the processes associated with the implementation of biodiversity measures on farms and to understand the behavioural drivers and functions of different system actors.
• Utilising a landscape survey with habitat attributes, develop an exploratory methodology to quantify the non-market value of selected biodiversity measures at a national scale.

Person Specification

Essential
• PhD in Economics, Environmental Economics, Social Sciences, Ecology, Geography or associated disciplines.
• Relevant research experience not to exceed 3 years’ post-PhD.

Desirable
• Econometric skills.
• Agri-environment sectoral and policy knowledge.
