Teagasc Post-Doctoral Research Fellow Level 2 - Food BioSciences (Ref: PD2/TOMI/MP/0618)
Basic Function of the post:
Teagasc is now seeking to recruit a highly motivated, ambitious Scientist with experience in cell culture and in vitro models of gastrointestinal digestion. The successful candidate will join our TOMI team. TOMI is focussed on producing Infant Milk Formula (IMF) at pilot scale by membrane filtration. By selecting this processing method, we hope to harness the health benefit of proteins in their natural state. The successful candidate will follow the fate of these dairy proteins during gastro-intestinal digestion using in vitro models of the infant gut. The bioavailability of IMF across the intestinal barrier will also be monitored using cell monolayers that represent the intestinal epithelial. TOMI has the potential to radically improve the quality of IMF produced in Ireland.
Duties & Responsibilities specific to this project:
To monitor IMF formulation during in vitro gastrointestinal digestion.
To determine the bioavailability of peptides and fatty acids using Caco2 and/or Caco2-HT29 monolayers.
To determine the health benefit of IMF on immortalized muscle and adipocytes cell lines.
To produce sufficient data and of excellent scientific quality for publication in international peer reviewed scientific journal.
To publish in international peer review scientific journal(s).
PhD in in biochemistry, cellular biology or related field.
A minimum of 3 years and not more than 5 years relevant research experience.
Experience in ELISA, standard molecular biology techniques (e.g. PCR, mRNA quantification),
SDS PAGE, Degree of protein hydrolysis, HPLC, gas chromatography, intervention trial design (power calculations, dosage).
Evidence of an ability to work to tight deadlines with dynamic and diverse staff.
