Teagasc Contract Laboratory Technician - GrassBeef - (Ref. CT/PN/0518)

Basic Function:

General laboratory support. Measurement of the concentration of compounds considered to be relevant to human health in beef produced within defined heifer production systems. Particular focus will be on vitamin E, anti-oxidant potential and both haem and non-haem iron.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

• Measurement of the chemical composition of beef.
• Measurement of the chemical composition of human blood from within the project.
• Liaison with collaborators within the “GrassBeef” project.
• Assisting with compilation of periodic progress reports.
• To assist Teagasc in meeting the commitments of the Quality Customer Service charter and action plan.
• To actively participate in the annual business planning and Performance Management Development System (PMDS) processes.
• Fully co-operate with the provisions made for ensuring the health, safety and welfare of themselves, fellow staff and non-Teagasc staff and co-operate with management in enabling Teagasc to comply with legal obligations. This includes full compliance with the responsibilities outlined in the Safety Statement.
• Any other duties as may be assigned from time to time.

Person Specification

Essential
• Candidates must have a Level 7 qualification or higher in a laboratory-based science.
• General laboratory skills particular within an analytical chemistry context.

Desirable
• A Level 8 qualification in analytical chemistry or a related subject would be a distinct advantage.
• Experience of HPLC, GC procedures.

Note: The ‘essential’ qualifications, knowledge, skills and behavioural competencies outlined above are ‘must-have’ which will be used in the selection process.
