Owing to the successful application to the German federal-state programme for promoting early-career researchers (tenure-track programme), the Faculty of History and Cultural Studies invites applications for a

W1 Professorship (with W2 tenure track) in Islamic Theology with a specific focus on the live design of Muslims

The position is offered with the earliest possible starting date for a period of six years pursuant to § 64 Para. 3 and 4 HHG (Hessian Higher Education Act). According to § 64 Para. 3 HHG, the applicant should have gained a doctoral degree at an institution of higher education other than Justus Liebig University Giessen (JLU) or have been in academic employment at an institution other than JLU for at least two years after conferral of a doctoral degree. The duration of said post-doctoral employment may not exceed four years or, in the case of successful completion of further academic training pursuant to § 62 Para. 6 HHG, may not exceed seven years. In the case of successful completion of the six-year W1 position, which is to be assessed in an evaluation procedure pursuant to § 64 Para. 2 HHG, the appointment will be converted into a permanent W2 professorship. Proficient knowledge of German language is expected.

The focus on the area of the live design of Muslims requires a special emphasis on the basics of Islamic theology as well as the reflection on human behaviour. Comparative approaches and interreligious understandings with the other theologies, the engagement with questions regarding the secular and value-pluralistic society, which arise out of the legal, social, cultural and economic context, in which the Islamic Theology is situated, are to be covered by the successful applicant from the scientific perspective.

Incumbents will be expected to represent the area of Islamic Theology with a focus on the live design of Muslims and to make use of as well as expand the cooperation opportunities with the other theological chairs at the JLU. The engagement at the Centre for Islamic Studies Frankfurt/Giessen is also expected.

The successful applicant will also be expected to participate in the tasks related to the academic reform as well as the academic self-administration. The candidate will teach 4 semester periods per week (after the successful probation period 8 semester periods per week) in the study program for primary schools with the teaching subject ‚Islamic Religion‘ as well as all other programs of study at the chair of Islamic Theology. The willingness to engage in interdisciplinary teaching (e.g. in cooperation with the Christian theologies) is a requirement.

He or she will also be expected to participate in the department's projects in international cooperation and his or her international contacts should contribute to the international profile of the department. In addition, the candidate should contribute his/her skills and experiences in the field of comparative and interreligious cooperation. The integration of gender in research and teaching is also welcome. In addition to a university degree in a relevant scientific area and pedagogical aptitude, an outstanding doctoral dissertation is expected. Besides, relevant and preferably international publications in recognized scientific journals are to be shown. Profound knowledge in Islamic Theology as well as Islamic religious education are assumed. First experiences in the acquisition of external funds are welcome. During the employment at the JLU, successes in the independent acquisition of funds are expected.
