Contract Technician - Potato Breeding (Ref: CTPB/OP/0817)

We are seeking to recruit a motivated, skilled technician to work in Teagasc’s highly successful potato breeding programme based at the Crops Research Department, Oak Park, Carlow. The successful candidate will work in a multidisciplinary environment and transition regularly between laboratory, glasshouse and field experimentation to support the research programme.
The potato market is continually diversifying and new varieties with enhanced disease resistance, eating characteristics and suitability for processing (crisping, french fries etc.) traits are continually required. The successful candidate will be part of a team undertaking the crossing programme in which these traits are introgressed into new varieties. The role will also involve evaluating and selecting the suitability of new potato varieties for these traits. The potato breeding programme has implemented a programme of marker assisted selection for disease resistance traits and the successful candidate will also assist with the deployment of new markers.

•To organise field tasks for the potato breeding field trials programme including potato agronomy and site maintenance.
•To assist with data recording and preparation of field trials for planting and planting plans.
•To assist with the crossing, seed extraction, glasshouse propagation and initial seedling selection in the potato breeding programme.
•To assist with the implementation of marker assisted selection within the breeding programme and with development of new markers.


•Candidates must have a Level 6 (Higher Certificate) in agriculture or plant science discipline or a related discipline.

•A Level 7 or Level 8 qualification in plant science or relevant discipline would be desirable.
•Laboratory or Agricultural Research experience would also be highly desirable.
