Teagasc Post Doctoral Research Fellow Level 1 (PD1) - Culture to Platform (Ref: PD1/APC A1/0417)

Basic Function of the post:
This post-doctoral appointee will be responsible for the valuable APC Culture Collection that has been developed over the last 10 years of the Centre. This candidate will be experienced in microbiology and will have an appreciation for the valuable asset that the culture collection has, and continues to become. This candidate will work closely with a technologist within the Culture to Product platform. The main activities of this postdoctoral scientist will involve the isolation, characterisation and curation of bioactive microorganisms for potential use as bio-therapeutics developed through the research programmes of the APC and delivery of high quality preparations of strains to APC researchers, ensuring there is no cross contamination of APC strains.

Duties & Responsibilities specific to this project:
• Isolation and characterisation of novel probiotics for applications in gut health.
• Characterisation and curation of bioactive microorganisms that emanate from the APC research programmes.
• Cataloguing all strains in the APC culture collection with particular reference to safeguarding all IP associated with the strains.
• Provision of high quality preparations of strains when requested by APC researchers.
• Development of strategies for the production of Faecal Transplant Material of optimal microbial composition for use in clinical trials.
• To participate in Alimentary Pharmabiotic Centre Education and Outreach activities.

Person Specification

Essential
PhD in Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Fermentation technology.
Relevant research experience not to exceed 3 years’ post-PhD.

Desirable
• Experience in propagation of obligate anaerobes and fastidious microorganisms.
• Bioinformatics and next generation sequencing experience.
